University of Illinois Researchers Store Quantum Information on a Chip for Over a Microsecond

A sourced note from the 6 October 2026 morning scan. The figure of record is the original report, not this page.

A team led by Elizabeth Goldschmidt built an on-chip quantum memory using erbium in thin-film lithium niobate that held multiple photons for more than 1 microsecond with high fidelity, published in Nano Letters. The group says retrieval efficiency and storage time still need to improve for practical use.

Why it matters

Chip-scale, manufacturable quantum memory is a key missing piece for quantum networks and photonic processors.
