Germany Advances Key Consortia in €640 Million ($717.2 Million USD) Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing Competition

A sourced note from the 5 October 2026 morning scan. The figure of record is the original report, not this page.

Germany's research ministry (BMFTR) moved six consortia (two each for neutral atoms, trapped ions, and superconducting circuits) past the outline phase of its up-to-€640M competition to field at least two fault-tolerant QPUs by 2030. Named teams include planqc's LOGIQC (ytterbium neutral atoms) and AQT Germany's NFQC-1k trapped-ion project; consortia must show working entry systems by March 31, 2027.

Why it matters

One of Europe's largest single national bets on fault tolerance, and it picks winners by modality, which shapes the German and EU hardware landscape through 2030.
