Researchers at the Fermilab-led SQMS Center studied 22 superconducting transmon qubits with seven materials-characterization techniques alongside coherence measurements. Surface oxide thickness, etched sidewall angle, and trench depth (below ~20 nm) together explained up to a twofold variation in performance among identically designed qubits.
Turns "why do identical qubits differ?" into specific, controllable fab parameters, which matters for every superconducting-qubit foundry trying to raise yield.
